Shanghai Institute of
Rehabilitation with Integrated Western and Traditional
Medicine was established on April 15, 1994.The institute has
been significantly improved on the Department of
Rehabilitation, ZhongShan Hospital, Medical Center of Fu Dan
University. It focuses on the study of injury and geriatric
rehabilitation, and insists on treating patients with
integrated Western and traditional medicine. It also offers
service to the patients from all over the country and makes
a great effort to improve Chinese rehabilitation.
The honorary director of the institute is Professor Jiang
Libeng, and Professor Shi Fengying is the head of the
institute. The institute now has 1200m2 of buildings and
includes three sections of Clinical Medicine, Physical and
Kinetic Therapy and Function Examination. Among its 34
employees are 5 full and associate professors, 13
physicians, 9 technicians and 7 nurses.
The section has outpatient service and
inpatient service. The outpatient service opens from Monday
to Friday, 8:00AM~12:00AM, 1:30PM~5:00PM.The attending
doctor is responsible for the outpatient. There is also
professor: Prof.Jiang Libeng, Tuesday 1:30PM~4:30PM, for low
back pain, neck pain, spinal cord injury and all kinds of
bone or joint dysfunction; Prof.Shi Fengying, Tuesday
8:00AM~12:00AM, for diabetes, osteoporosis, hypertension and
geriatric rehabilitation; Prof.Li Zebing, Thursday
8:00AM~12:00AM, for lumbar disc protrusion, stroke, and
joint dysfunction. there are standing PT room, OT
room, psychological therapy room, language training room and
Chinese traditional therapy room. Two attending doctors and
there residents are responsible for the inpatients. Besides
the excellent doctors, nurses are also the best. There are
seven nurses, who are always smile and patient to the
patients. All the staff is often praised by the patients.
Integrated western and Chinese traditional
medicine is the character of the clinical section. By
accepting Chinese herbs or acupuncture, patients who have
neck pain, low back pain or stroke have made great progress
in their rehabilitation.
Besides the clinical work, the staff also do
some research work. Nowadays, subjects of the research are:
Chinese traditional therapy in the cervical spinal
myolopathy; Study of the complications of diabetes; Therapy
of osteoporosis.
The Institute is responsible for the education
of the rehabilitation medicine to the students from Medical
Center of FuDan University and Shanghai Physical College.
Except for the education, the Institute is also establishing
communication and cooperation with the Rehabilitation center
in American, Australia and Sweden, and inviting the foreign
specialists to make speech. Nowadays, the Institute has
succeeded in applying for CMB, which will be benefit for the
talents training and development of the
rehabilitation medicine in China.
Physical and kinetic therapy section occupies
the important position in the institute of rehabilitation
medicine ,and its predecessor is the traditional
physiotherapy .It is divided into two parts ,the ward and
out-patient service. The out-patients are served by a
attending doctor. In addition, two technicians and one
doctor are responsible for the physiotherapy, massage and
traction respectively .The other attending doctor who has
accepted special training takes charge of the ward ,and a
technician , a assistant researcher and a practical
researcher are responsible for physiotherapy and modern
rehabilitation therapy . At present we are engaged in
occupational therapy(OT) and physical therapy(PT) of modern
rehabilitation medicine . Because a lot of diseases can not
be thoroughly cured or cause serious disability. Patients
can return to the family and society after treated by modern
rehabilitation assessment and therapy techniques which are
used to improve their functions.
Major kinds of disease: hemiplegia, paraplegia,
spinal cord injury and the neck pain, low back pain,
amputation, dysfunction of joint and diabetes etc .
Therapy Procedure: Patients are evaluated by
FIM (Function Independence Measure), STREAM( hemiplegia
function evaluation ) , Barthel Index (activities of daily
living) , MMT's ( manual muscle testing ) and ROM ( range of
motion ), during the early ,middle, and end stage. Then
different schemes are made on the base of the results of
assessment. Patients who have nerve system injury such as
hemiplegia and paraplegia are treated by Bobath's therapy ,
Brunnstrom's therapy , PNF' technique , Rood's therapy,
MRP(motor relearning program), OT and the traditional
physical therapy to improve the function and ADL(activities
of daily living). We use mobilization, traction and muscle
training, as well as physiotherapy to raise the range of
joint motion of patients who are suffering from joint
dysfunction. We use Chinese-style and western-style
technique attaching with medical gymnastics and
physiotherapy to lighten symptoms of the patients who are
suffering from the neck pain, low back pain, within the
short time. There will also have good efficiency in long
time. Through the guidance of the aerobics exercise, the
diabetic patients can decrease kinds and dosage of medicines
to a great degree. At the same time the control of diet can
be also relatively relaxed the quota, thus the patients will
raise quality of their life.
The function examination section of
rehabilitation medicine staffed by four proficient members.
One associate professor specialized in clinical medicine,
one assistant researcher engaged in research work, two
experienced technicians. Our work provides helpful evidence
for clinical diagnosis.
Function examination plays an important role in
rehabilitation medicine, which is useful to realize the
range and extent of impairment and compensation ability,
estimate the function of disability, form a rehabilitation
project and evaluate the rehabilitation effect.
This section has advanced equipment such as the Nicolet
electrophysiology instrument performing computer-aided
electromyography, nerve conduction studies and evoked
potential studies, the Hologic QDR-2000 dual energy X-ray
absorptiometry bone densitometer, the Anima gravicorder, the
Cybex isokinetic testing and so on. These facilities provide
function examination and estimating for the patients not
only from our department but also from other clinical
departments. Because of the fame, many outpatients are
examined here to confirm the diagnosis.
More than 2,000 patients examined by this
electrophysiology instrument per year including neurology,
pediatrics, neurosurgery, endocrinology, dermatology,
otolaryngology and so on. This exam is of great help to
differentiating neural source from muscular source, defining
the range of impairment, judging the possibility of nerve
reproduction especially after nerve anastomosis and many
other diseases. Furthermore, its conclusion can also be used
to judiciary. Over 2,500 aged and young patients each year
get their bone density here. Treated in time, fracture might
be prevented. Accuracy, low radiation and good stability are
the advantages of this densitometer. Gravicorder is used to
estimate the objective and quantitative balance function
which produce evidence for early diagnosis and therapy of
balance handicap.
Cybex isokinetic testing describes a
process in which a body segment accelerates to achieve a
pre-selected fixed speed against a variable accommodating
resistance. As torque is produced in an attempt to overcome
the pre-selected speed, the resistance varies to exactly
match the force applied at every point in the range of
motion. Thus it can be used to identify and quantify
functional musculoskeletal deficits and have been proved to
be reproducible and safe.
In summary, function examination is of a
great value in rehabilitation and other clinical medicine.
Offering perfect medical science and high-class service to
all patients is our pleasure.
