Emergency Department

Founded in 1987, the emergency department of Zhongshan Hospital affiliated to Fudan University is one of emergency departments established early in China, a master degree granting institute, one of the first emergency technician training bases certified by the Ministry of Health, and the Shanghai Municipal Emergency Resident Physician and Specialist Training Base. In 2013, it won the “National Clinical Key Specialty Construction Project”. After 30 years of development, the department has established an integrated first aid system of “In-hospital Emergency/First Aid-Observation-ICU”, and has successfully saved many acute and severe patients. It has become very influential in Shanghai and East China. Apart from treating a great amount of emergent and critical ill patients in Shanghai, this department also receives acute or severe patients transferred from other provinces. The amount of emergency cases is rising steadily in recent years and exceeded 180,000 in 2012. It delivers emergency treatment to over 30,000 acute and severe patients per year, with the successful rate of 98%.

In 2014, the department was moved to the New Emergency Building in the East District of Zhongshan Hospital. The New Emergency Building was designed strictly according to the construction and spatial distribution of Grade-3 hospital emergency department required by the National Health and Family Planning Commission. The Emergency Passage, First-Aid Passage, and Escape Passage are independent. Its spatial distribution and process design are reasonable, with a heliport for transfer and rescue of severe patients. The building area covers about 10,000 m2. It has 10 regular emergency rooms, 1 special treatment room, 4 severe patient rooms with advanced fully functional equipment, 1 debridement room, 1 plaster room, and 2 emergency operation rooms, which enable cardiopulmonary cerebral resuscitation for acute and severe patients and satisfy their treatment needs. The department is also capable of diagnosis and treatment of special patients and high-risk pregnant/parturient women, and can provide medical security for emergent and important events. The department has its own cashier, clinical laboratory, pharmacy, emergency color ultrasonography, electrocardiogram and Radiology Department. Within the emergency and rescue area, all regular and assistant examinations can be done for acute and severe patients conveniently.

The department now has 3 emergency observing rooms with a total of 228 beds for all kinds of emergent and severe patients. ICU offers 24 beds designed strictly according to the spirit of “Two Lines and 3 Sections”, with independent outside family visit corridor. Electrocardiogram, cerebral function monitor and all types of organ support equipment are very advanced. Emergency ICU mainly admits patients with severe sepsis, shock, multiple organ failure, acute respiratory failure, heart failure, severe acute pancreatitis, severe electrolyte disorder, acute poisoning and multiple injuries. Meanwhile, its regular service includes invasive and non-invasive hemodynamic monitoring, invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation, bedside blood purification, minimal invasive percutaneous tracheostomy, bedside bronchoscope, mild hypothermia and other treatment technologies for organ and organ support. The successful rescue rate keeps above 95%.

The department now has 32 physicians, of whom 3 with senior professional titles, 10 with associate senior professional titles, 17 attending physicians, one doctoral supervisor, 2 master supervisors, and 91% of them have a master’s degree. Every year the department recruits some resident physicians for standardized training. Now about 21 resident physicians have been trained here. The department has gradually formed the team spirit and atmosphere of “cooperation and optimism”.

In recent years, based on Zhongshan hospital’s discipline advantage and platform, the emergency department actively cultivates discipline developing direction and clinical diagnosis highlights, forming its own specialties on severe sepsis/septic shock, multiple organ failure, severe acute pancreatitis, acute poisoning, and early diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. As for the diseases mentioned above, the department takes the lead in clinical diagnosis, treatment and basic research in China. It has won 4 projects from NSCF, 3 from Shanghai Municipal Committee of Science and Technology, 1 from Shanghai Excellent Young Talents of Public Health Program, 2 from Shanghai Municipal TMC Development Program, 1 from Shanghai Integrated Medicine Construction Platform, and 3 from Shanghai Commission of Health and Family Planning with the research fund over 5,000,000 Yuan. In recent years, staff members of the department have published 15 SCI papers and over 50 papers on top journals and obtained 5 Chinese invention patents.
