Founded in 1940, the department has become a modern medical laboratory with advanced equipment and professional faculty, with generations of efforts. In 2009, it first acquired ISO 15189 certification in Shanghai, a symbol of quality and ability of a medical laboratory. In the same year, it became a Level-1 HbA1c Referral Laboratory certificated by National Glycohemoglobin Standardization Program (NGSP) of the U.S. In 2010, it was among the first to win the National Key Clinical Laboratory Construction Project. Covering over 1500 square meters, it possesses the first-class automatic sample pretreatment system and over 200 automatic clinical detection analyzers. Funded by the National Key Clinical Laboratory Construction Project, they have introduced in advanced flow, mass spectrum, sequencing, circulating tumor cell, and circulating tumor DNA cytometric platforms. They have a Basic Clinical Laboratory, an Emergency Laboratory, a Clinical Biochemistry Laboratory, a Clinical Immunology Laboratory, a Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory and a Blood Laboratory, satisfying diagnostic needs of both common clinical diseases and critical and intractable ones.
Its director, Prof. Pan Boshen, is a renowned expert in this filed, who has been one of the Ten Prominent Personalities in National Laboratory Medicine, as well as the ninth chairman of Laboratory Medicine Society of Chinese Medical Association. There are about 100 regular staff members, including 3 medical practitioners. We are also responsible for educating master and doctoral students, to continually cultivate talents for the development of laboratory medicine.
Quality is the cornerstone of a medical laboratory. Thus this department participates in various external quality assessments regularly, and are commended by the Clinical Laboratory Center of Ministry of Health and granted with the title of Shanghai Excellent Laboratory of Quality Survey for several successive years. It has won the Outstanding Performance Award in 100 Quality Surveys granted by Shanghai Clinical Laboratory Center, and listed among the Top 10 State Excellent Clinical Laboratories for several times. With the testing frequency reaching over 35 million times per year, it ranks high in the country, and is one of the largest clinical laboratories in hospitals of Shanghai. Its testing quality and comprehensive strength have been recognized by several large foreign testing groups. BARC and QUEST, the biggest testing groups in Europe and America, have chosen this department as their central laboratories in China, undertaking the testing work for Greater China Central Laboratory of Global Drug Clinical Trials.
In addition to quality, this department also puts emphasis on process optimization to speed up detection, shortening patients’ waiting time and helping clinicians make quicker diagnosis. Showing consideration for patients and viewing them as the top priority, it has been awarded “Quality Service” by the hospital and Shanghai government for several times, Advanced Collective of Shanghai Health and Family Planning System from 2012 to 2014, and Model Women Workers Station in both Shanghai and China in 2014 and 2015. The Party branch of the department has been granted with “Advanced Party Branch” for years, with the title “Model Workers’ Family” by All-China Federation of Trade Unions in 2013.
Teaching and Academic Research Achievements
While developing clinical detection capability and maintaining the leading position in China, it puts much emphasis on scientific research too, with several projects undertaken and completed. Over 150 papers have been published in academic journals at home and abroad since 2010. It has compiled several important monographs such as Chinese Medical Encyclopedia: Laboratory Diagnostics, National Guide to Clinical Laboratory Procedures (Fourth Edition), Laboratory Diagnostics (Third Edition), Clinical Molecular Diagnostics, and Medical Laboratory Guide: Help You with Laboratory Results as chief editor or associate editor. Prof. Pan has written and revised a number of national clinical application recommendations and clinical laboratory occupation standards , including Recommendations for the Use of Cardiac Markers in Coronary Artery Diseases and Heart Failure, Recommendations for Laboratory Support for the Diagnosis and Monitoring of Diabetes, Recommendations for the Use of POCT, Recommendations for the Use of Tumor Marker, Recommendations for Laboratory Support for the Diagnosis and Monitoring of Thyroid Disease, Recommendations for the Use of Flow Cytometry, Recommendations for Laboratory Support for the Diagnosis and Monitoring of Hemorrhagic Disease, and Recommendations for Laboratory Support for the Diagnosis and Monitoring of Hepatic disease, which are of great guiding significance for proper applications of clinical tests.
As one of the major undertakers of the Construction of Chinese Reference Interval of Common Clinical Laboratory Items and Related Technical Support System, a key project of the Ministry of Science and Technology in the Twelfth Five-year Plan of China, it has established over 20 common reference intervals of clinical laboratory tests for Chinese people, which fills in the gap of domestic research. Meanwhile, it has played a leading role in Shanghai Glycated Hemoglobin Project (SHGHP), attracting over 150 hospitals all over the country to engage in, which makes a great contribution to the improvement of accuracy and consistency of inter-hospital HbA1c test results, and was thus awarded Advanced Appropriate Technology Promotion Project of Shanghai Health System. Moreover, it introduces in DNA Sequencing Equipment, Cell Search Circulating Tumor Cell Detection System, Droplet Digital PCR Machine, and High Performance Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrum Analyzer, to carry out various tests of hi-tech molecular diagnosis, tumor liquid biopsy and hormone accurate detection, effectively assisting individualized diagnosis and treatment against the background of accurate medicine.
