BioMedical Research Center


Zhongshan Biological Medical Research Center is the biggest and most advanced R&D platform of biological medicine in Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University. The Center grew out of the Research Center set up in 1996. The Center consists of 10 standard labs and 150 sets of devices and equipment, including a Vivo Study Center, a Cell and Molecular Biology Center, a Clinical Bioinformatics Center that includes a Living Cell Dynamic Workstation, a Clinical Lab-on-a-chip, a Biobank, a Molecular Immunology and Molecular Pathology Platform, a Clinical Epigenetics Lab, a Cell Ultrastructure Room, etc.The Center closely cooperates and shares resources with Shanghai Key Laboratory of Organ Transplantation and Shanghai Bioinformatics Institute.

The director is responsible for the Center. Prof. Wang Xiangdong, Distinguished Professor of Zhongshan Hospital, professor of Respiratory Department, doctoral supervisor, director of Fudan Clinical Bioinformatics Center, head of Shanghai Clinical Bioinformatics Institute, and adjunct professor of King’s College London, is now director of the Center. He is also editor-in-chief of several medical journals, including Clinical and Translational Medicine (, Translational Medicine Journal of Disease Biomarker (, Journal of Clinical Bioinformatics ( and co-editor of American Journal of Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology and many other international medical journals.

Many rules and regulations have been formulated by the Center to ensure “systematic, normal, professional, scientific and standard” management so as to guarantee that all work in the labs are done in a strict, standardized, efficient and scientific way. Thanks to this new management system, great advantages have been exhibited in respects of resource sharing, capital allotment and personnel assignment, which has greatly improved work efficiency, and provides favorable conditions of comprehensive reform of experiment teaching, opening up of labs, research support and social services.

The Vivo Study Center is approved by Shanghai Animal Management Committee to keep and feed small and big animals, which is equipped with operation rooms, sampling rooms and disinfection devices. The Cell and Molecular Biology Center is equipped with full sets of devices related to scientific research in cell and molecular biology. The Clinical Bioinformatics Center is devoted to tissue specimen storage, and clinical application and research of clinical bioinformatics, genomics and proteomics. The Center of Excellence (COE) is committed to RNA & DNA-related research and construction of the second-generation sequencing system.

The Center has over 40 personnel, including 3 professors, 2 associate professors, 2 Ph.D.s, 18 Master and Bachelor degree holders as well as supporting staff in other platforms. The Center is  open to all medical staff and scientific researchers and postgraduate students. As the work ethics have shifted from “to serve, to develop, and to survive” to “quality service, all-round development and brilliant achievements”, the Center has trained and educated over 2000 physicians and postgraduates and undertakes and participates in more than 500 research projects. It has evolved into an international platform that excels in high quality service, advanced bio-technology, cost-effective operation, open and transparent management, and productive output of biomedical research and development. The Center has enhanced communication and cooperation with domestic and foreign experts, universities and institutions, which accelerates the production of research results, elevates the reputation of Zhongshan Hospital in R&D strength and attracts more investments and funds for research projects. The Center undertakes multi-disciplinary, multi-specialty, multi-level and multi-directional teaching tasks in the lab, cooperates with many renowned biomedical companies at home and abroad, provides many staff training and technical services for the hospital, the university and the  municipality to achieve resource sharing and  optimal utilization.

During the course of construction, the Center puts emphasis on medical treatment, researchers and postgraduates, and constantly explores to establish a distinctive research and experiment system, and a more scientific and reasonable research model. It also strives to improve the assessment system and form a high-quality experiment team, strengthen the effect of clinical  education and training, perfect the management system of labs, promote the application of information technologies, enhance its research strength and capability to  serve the local people and build a model and high-level platform for chemical experiment and teaching, which constitute the future development goals of this Center.
