Laboratory of Cardiovascular Diseases Institute

In 1998, upon the 40th anniversary of their founding, the biochemistry lab, the pharmacology lab, the pathology lab and several other labs were integrated to form the Central Lab of Shanghai Cardiovascular Disease Institute. In 1999, under the direction of Professor Ge Junbo, then deputy director of the Institute, the Lab was formally established and became what it is now. The first director and associate director of the Lab are Prof. Yang Yingzhen and Prof. Wang Keqiang, and the present ones are Prof. Zou Yunzeng and Prof. Chen Ruizhen. As the academic consultants and advisors of the Lab, Academician Ge Junbo, Academician Chen Haozhu, Prof. Zhu Junren and Prof. Yang Yingzhen gave suggestions and advice to the lab  on research directions and professional development. After years of efforts, the Lab has achieved great progress. In this Lab, there is one Chang Jiang Scholar designated by the Ministry of Education(Zou Yunzeng), one Distinguished Professor of the country’s “One Thousand Talents Plan”(Ren Jun), one winner of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars(Zou Yunzeng), two New Century Excellent Talents of the Ministry of Education(Chen Ruizhen and Sun Aijun), one Technology Elite of Shanghai(Zou Yunzeng), two Distinguished Academic Leaders of Shanghai(Zou Yunzeng and Chen Ruizhen), one Youth Talent in Science and Technology of Shanghai(Sun Aijun), one talent of the Shanghai Dawn Program(Sun Aijun), one Morning Star in Science of Shanghai(Sun Aijun), one Pujiang Talent of Shanghai(Yang Xiangdong), and one Distinguished Chair Professor of Fudan University(Hu Kai). At present, the Lab has 19 full-time in-service personnel, with 5 holding senior professional titles, 5 holding associate senior professional titles, 1 assistant researcher, 4 technicians-in-charge and 4 technicians. Guided by the motto of Zhongshan Hospital, namely, “Discipline, Practicality, Unity and Devotion”, centering on yielding academic results and fostering new talents, the Lab is striving to be an internationally renowned and nationally leading base of clinical and basic research as well as talent training in the field of cardiovascular diseases.

1. Research Team

In 1999, headed by Prof. Ge Junbo, a team featured with young and middle-aged talents took over the Central Lab of Shanghai Cardiovascular Disease Institute from their predecessors, and  a research team led by Go Junbo, and backboned by Chen Ruizhen and Sun Aijun was gradually formed. It took an active part in “the fundamental researches of the attack, prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases”, the first national “973” project concerning the cardiovascular systems with Pro. Tang Chaosu being the chief scientist. Since 2004, after Prof. Zou Yunzeng and Prof. Yang Xiangdong successively joined the team, the Lab has launched some basic and translational medical researches on myocardial remodeling, myocardial microcirculatory mysfunction, cardiac failure and relevant interventions, reinforced the research strength of the research team and expanded its research fields. In 2013, as a Distinguished Professor of the national “One Thousand Talents” plan, Ren Jun became a new member of the team. After that, the team launched the research on the influence of metabolic disorder on cardiovascular diseases, which further enhanced its research strength and expanded its research fields.

2. Scientific Researches and Achievements

The Central Lab of Shanghai Cardiovascular Disease Institute focuses mainly on basic research of cardiovascular diseases and its transformations, and chiefly carries out researches of myocardial remodeling and cardiac failure in hypertension and the molecular mechanism of atherosclerosis, basic and clinical researches on the influence of the stem cells on cardiovascular diseases, and basic researches of coronary heart disease and its treatment. In the past decade, it has successively  undertaken several major or key research projects, including the national “973”Projects, “863” Projects, State Key Scientific and Technological Projects, key projects funded by National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and National Natural Science Foundation of China, major international joint research programs, Creative Research Groups Projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and over 80 other research projects funded by the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health and Shanghai Municipal Government, of which a series of innovative scientific research findings have been achieved. It has published more than 300 papers on prestigious magazines of cardiovascular disease, such as Circulation°ĘCirc Res, JACC, ATVB, Hypertension, Cardiovasc Res and Stem Cells, and its findings have been quoted by Lancet, JAMA, Nature, Circulation and other magazines alike, with the quality of papers improving annually. It has edited 4 monographs and textbooks. It has won a second prize of the National Award for Progress in Science and Technology, a second prize of the National Award for Technological Invention, two second prizes and a third prize of the Chinese Medical Sciences and Technology Award, two first prizes of Shanghai Scientific and Technological Progress Award, one Shanghai International Cooperation Award, two second prizes of the Scientific and Technological Progress Award of the Ministry of Education, a third prize of the Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award, first and second prizes of Shanghai Medical Science and Technology Award and many more.

3.  Academic Exchange and Cooperation

Through 18 years' efforts, the Central Lab of Shanghai Cardiovascular Disease Institute has become more open, vigorous and nationally influential in the field of cardiovascular disease. By hosting and attending academic seminars home and abroad, it has built strong cooperative ties with university labs in Japan, Germany, US and other countries, which facilitates its integration with national and international researches. Every year, members of the Lab are invited to attend more than 10 international academic meetings , and on average 3 to5 staff will visit foreign and other domestic labs or give lectures at academic conferences in China. They hosted or supported several national and international meetings, including the Eastern Conference of Cardiac Diseases, which helped to extend its influence both in China and abroad.

4.  Talents Cultivation

The Lab has cultivated numerous young researchers and postgraduates. Up until 2016, it has fostered hundreds of master and doctoral students, and 6 post-doctors. At present, in addition to instructing 14 doctoral candidates and 2 graduate students, it also assumes the responsibility of training and educating postgraduates from other departments such as the Cardiology Department, Cardiac Surgery Department, Echo Room and ECG Room.
