As one of the first cardiac ultrasound diagnostic departments in China, the Cardiac Ultrasound Diagnostic Department of Zhongshan Hospital affiliated to Fudan University was founded in 1984 by Prof. Jaing Leng.
This department is an important part of the National Key Discipline of Imaging Science, Shanghai Cardiovascular Clinical Medicine Center, Shanghai Sonography Quality Control Center, Institute of Ultrasound Medicine and Engineering of Fudan University. The department is also one of the major ultrasound diagnostic centers for cardiovascular disease.
Prof. Jiang Leng and Prof. Shen Xuedong successively served as the director of the department. Currently, Prof. Shu Xianhong and Associate Chief Physician Pan Cuizhen are respectively the director and associate director of the department.
The department has 19 medical staff in all with 12 PhDs and 3 with master’s degree. Five have senior professional titles, 2 junior titles and 4 primary titles.
Over the past 30 years, the department has taken a leading role domestically in medical treatment and research. Routine procedures include transthoractic echocardiography, transesophageal echocardiography, stress echocardiography and cardiac ultrasound monitoring during cardiac operations and interventions. The ultrasound diagnostic accuracy is above 98%, as confirmed by surgery, which is at an advanced level by the international standards. In addition, over 98% surgical candidates avoided preoperative traumatic heart catheterization.
Over the years the department has received multiple awards including the National Women’s Excellence Award, Shanghai “March the 8th” Red Banner Organization, Shanghai Best Red Banner Post in Health System, Shanghai Women’s Excellence Award in Educational System, Fudan Women’s Excellence Award, Fudan “March the 8th” Red Banner Organization.
The department is equipped with 15 sets of Philips EPIQ 7c, Philips IE 33, GE E9 multifunctional color cardiac ultrasonic diagnostic devices and 2 sets of bedside portable cardiac ultrasonic diagnosis device. Each year, the department carries out more than 11000 cardiac ultrasound procedures including routine cardiac ultrasound checkups, transesophageal echocardiography, emergency bedside echocardiograhphy examinations, and intraoperative ultrasonic monitoring. The caseload ranks the first in Shanghai and East China, and one of the first in the nation. The department also carries out ultrasound monitoring during new technical procedures including MitraClip, Transfemoral Aortic Valve Replacement, Transcutaneous Pulmonary Valve Implantation, and Percutaneous Left Atrial Appendage Closure.
Teaching and Research
The Cardiac Ultrasound Department is staffed with one PhD supervisor( Prof. Su Xianhong) and three master supervisors(Chief Physician Pan Cuizhen, and Chief Physician Cheng Leilei and Associate Chief Physician Dong Lili ). The department has graduated over 50 students with either doctoral or master’s degree. There are currently 8 PhD candidates and 10 master’s degree candidates.
Every year, we hold 1to 3 sessions of continuing education courses for over 20 visiting physicians. The department has trained over 400 visiting physicians. The department also holds Current Technology in Echocardiography Symposium once or twice every year.
The department staff have published over 200 journal articles and co-authored over 20 monographs. Each year, the department presents over 10 journal articles in Annual Meeting of Cardiology and Annual Meeting of Echocardiography in the United States and in Europe. The department has been awarded with 2 second prizes of Health Ministry Award for Progress in Science and Technology and 2 second prizes of Shanghai Award for Progress in Science and Technology respectively, 3 third prizes of Health Ministry Award for Progress in Science and Technology, 6 third prizes of Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award and 1 first prize of Shanghai Medical Science Progress Award.
