Introduction

The Department of Medical Oncology of Zhongshan Hospital affiliated to Fudan University is not only permeated with a rigorous academic atmosphere, but also a very young, creative and exploratory unit. The department was formed out of the Department of Chemotherapy in former Fangsan Hospital. After the merger of Fangsan Hospital and Zhongshan Hospital, the Department of Chemotherapy was put under Zhongshan’s management. It started to develop rapidly from 2004, and was renamed as the Department of Medical Oncology in 2006. For 10 years, led by Prof. Liu Tianshu, who enjoys a high reputation at home and abroad, the department has made constant progress, and was awarded the project of key clinical discipline construction by the Ministry of Public Health in 2013. The department has a skillful medical team with sophisticated expertise and noble ethics, and more than 80% of the staff members hold master’s degree or above. There are 2 chief physicians, 1 associate chief physician, 12 attending physicians and 2 residents in the department, 4 with doctoral degree and 11 master’s degree. It handles about 19,000 outpatient cases and discharges over 5,000 inpatients per year.

The department offers 56 regular beds, and runs general clinics and specialized disease clinics to provide patients with excellent and convenient medical services.

Clinical Features

The Department of Medical Oncology, Zhongshan Hospital focuses on diagnosis and treatment of malignant solid tumor. Taking advantage of the integrated strength of Departments of Surgery, Pathology, Radiotherapy and Radio & Image, it endeavors to build up a multidisciplinary treatment model. It has established multidisciplinary treatment teams of gastric cancer, colorectal cancer, esophagus cancer, breast cancer, pancreatic cancer and abdominal soft tissue tumor cooperating with related departments, held regular discussions on intractable and typical cases of gastric cancer, colorectal cancer, esophagus cancer, breast cancer and soft tissue sarcoma, and took the lead in China in setting up a multidisciplinary discussion clinic of tumor in order to explore the best treatment mode and sequence. Based on chemotherapy and the targeted drug therapy, combining Chinese medicine with biological immunotherapy, the department offers each patient the best evidence-based and standardized treatment according to international standardized treatment guidelines and the latest research results.

It also undertakes several international multi-centered clinical researches on new drugs for hepatocellular carcinoma, gastric cancer and colorectal cancer, to bring new treatment opportunities to patients. It has achieved rich experience in exploration of translational research on tumor associated molecular markers, study of the perioperative treatment strategy for gastric cancer, research on advanced gastric cancer drugs, prediction of chemosensitivity of malignant tumors, targeted cancer therapy and biological immunotherapy, and has formed its own academic research foundation.

The department also provides patients with health education platforms to learn more about the diseases. Its philosophy in cancer treatment, namely being "reasonable, standardized, optimized, sequential and comprehensive", has won praise and recognition among cancer patients and their families.

Research and Education Achievements: The department has one doctoral tutor who has trained and educated more than 10 postgraduates.

It takes on teaching tasks on different levels and of various forms , including standardization training of physicians and oncologists, and education of training doctors.

From 2013 to 2015, it has successfully organized national continuing education classes on “Evidence-based Medicine in Tumor”, and a subsequent national continuing education project is on the agenda. Since 2012, it has been holding “Zhongshan Oncology Symposium” annually, which has gathered experts both at home and abroad, and attracted more than 300  attendants every year. Besides, series of lectures on oncology have been  held regularly in the hospital.

The department gained the second prize of National Scientific and Technological Progress Award in 2015 (Liu Tianshu ranked No. 9), and the first prize of Shanghai Scientific and Technological Progress Award in 2012 (Liu Tianshu ranked No. 11). From 2008 to 2015, the department has  won one national natural science fund project, three Shanghai science and technology commission projects, and one patent. It has also published over 40 SCI articles.
